Uncle Sam's Hat
Every Fourth of July, Victoria Frieswick, seven, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, enjoys helping her twin siblings, three-year-olds Liam and Tess, decorate homemade Uncle Sam hats designed by their mom, Kathleen, an elementary school art teacher.
To create a similar hat, cut a rectangle from a piece of red poster board (roughly 12 inches high by 9 inches wide). Using a ruler and an X-Acto knife (a parent's job), make six vertical slits in the poster board at least 1 inch apart, then weave in a piece of white paper. Cut a band, roughly 3 by 12 inches, from blue construction paper and glue on three white paper stars. Glue the decorated band to the bottom of the woven poster board.
Finally, cut another band from the poster board that's long enough to fit around a child's head. Staple (end points out) the band to the inside bottom of the hat. Wrap it around the child's head and then secure it with tape, a staple or a paper clip.
