Eight Easy Holiday Decorations

Easy holiday decorations from FamilyFun

Holiday planterPeppermint sticks and red and green lollipops sprout from these decorated terra-cotta pots. You and your children may even want to make a few extras to dress up a favorite houseplant or to give as gifts to friends, relatives and teachers.

MATERIALS

Terra-cotta pot
Acrylic paints
Paintbrushes
Styrofoam block
String and scissors
1 yard of 2-inch-wide green ribbon
Lollipops, peppermint sticks and loose candies

New terra-cotta pots can be painted at once. Used ones should be cleaned and dried before you decorate them. Paint the outside of your pot and the inside down to the first lip with a solid color. After the base coat dries, add complementary details: sponge-painted stripes, white "splatter" snow, holiday greetings or symbols. (Sketching designs in pencil before you paint is helpful for more detailed images.) When the paint dries, place a piece of Styrofoam in the pot's bottom to anchor your lollipops (and to reduce the amount of candy you'll need). Cut leaves out of the green ribbon and tie them to the lollipop sticks with string. Push the lollipops and peppermint sticks into the Styrofoam, then cover it with loose candies.
