Holiday Letter Board
This holiday bulletin board serves double duty. First, it brings order to the slew of cards that annually covers most families' countertops. Second, it's decorative. Like a rotating gallery, it allows you to keep the prettiest cards in plain view. This project is surprisingly easy, but less free-form than some of the others, so it's best for older kids.
MATERIALS
Wood-framed cork bulletin board
Acrylic paints
Paintbrush
Scissors and stapler
3 to 4 yards ribbon
Flat-head metal thumbtacks
Optional: Pliers, buttons, glue that adheres
to metal
Begin by painting the bulletin board. We used metallic gold paint on the frame and green paint on the cork interior, but you may want to experiment with other color combinations, such as gold and silver or green and red.
Whichever colors you choose, you'll want to apply two coats to cover the cork thoroughly. Let the paint dry. Cut, then staple lengths of ribbon from one side of the frame to the other, in a crisscross or crazy-quilt pattern.
The next step is to anchor the ribbons wherever they cross one another. The simplest method is to use metal thumbtacks that match your ribbon color. For a fancier look, you can decorate the tack heads by gluing on holiday buttons from your local fabric store. (Using pliers, pull the wire loop off the back of each button first.)
Push in the decorated tacks wherever the ribbons intersect, then slip your holiday cards underneath the ribbons.
