I know at least three sweet ways to give plants as quick gifts. A freshly painted, old clay flowerpot can be filled with little stones and used for forcing bulbs. We used acrylic paint for this one so it wouldn't come off and (honest!) got our bulbs from grocery stores. Or you can give cuttings from a few of your favorite and most hardy houseplants. Use an old-fashioned jar, and don't forget the index card with sunlight and watering instructions--and a little kid-drawn picture of the plant. Last, your kids can design a seed-packet storage bin for a gardener. It should be at least as big as a shoe box, preferably with a tightly fitting lid, just in case of mice. Drop a few seed packets in there; you can get them at many grocery stores.
