AN INTERNATIONAL CHRISTMAS
Candice and Nick Broom teach English as a second language to adults in Birmingham, Alabama. Many of their students live far from friends and family, so last Christmas, the Brooms decided to include all the students in their holiday festivities with an international potluck Christmas party. It was also an opportunity to introduce son Jonas, age 3, to traditions from around the globe. The couple set up tables in the yard, photocopied the lyrics to their favorite holiday songs, and invited guests to bring food reflecting their national cuisines. That night,
partygoers savored German cookies, French ice-cream cake, and a variety of goodies from Canada, Laos, and the Philippines. Then everyone went indoors to sing international carols by candlelight. Candice says she hopes the tradition will continue so Jonas and his new baby brother, Deacon, can participate as they get older. "It's a great way to celebrate diversity and the season."
