A Doll's Quilt

Your child's first quilting project from FamilyFun

by Karen Willing and Julie Dock
This doll-size project is ideal for the first-time quilter. It offers quiltall the creative satisfaction of a full-size patchwork quilt yet requires a fraction of the time and materials. We know that quilting can seem daunting to the uninitiated, but don't be put off. This project is easier than it looks. With our step-by-step instructions, a parent and child should be able to complete it in a day.

pattern First, some background: You'll be making a nine-patch quilt, a traditional American pattern. Ours consists of 20 large squares, ten of which are nine-patches, all surrounded by a double border.

Before you get started, you'll need a few quilting tools as well as four different fabrics of 100 percent cotton. The artistic process begins when you choose your fabric. Pick your patterned fabric (fabric D), making sure the design is no larger than your hand. Then choose other fabrics that complement it. Be sure to wash, dry and iron your fabric before starting.

MATERIALS

Cutting mat
Rotary cutter
Pins (safety and straight)
Sewing machine
Cotton thread
Cotton batting

FABRIC

Fabric A: 1/4 yard. Choose a color that will complement fabric D in the nine-patches.
Fabric B: 3/4 yard. Use a light-colored fabric in the nine-patches, the solid squares and the border.
Fabric C: 1/4 yard. Choose a color that will complement fabric D in the nine-patches.
Fabric D: 1 yard. Use a multicolored fabric for the border, backing and center of the nine-patches.
