Instructions
  1. Start with a large box that is big enough to cover half your child's body. Cut off the bottom flaps of the box with scissors or a utility knife (a job for parents).

  2. Cut out rectangular wing flaps on the sides, making sure that they are a little longer than your child's arms and directly across from each other. When cutting, leave the tops of the wings attached to the box at the shoulder line.

  3. For the head hole, cut out a rectangle on the top of the box that's big enough for your child's head but not too close to the edges of the box. You should make the opening for the head on the smaller side, to prevent the costume from slipping off your child's shoulders.

  4. For the chicken costume, help your child cut a bunch of feathers out of yellow construction paper. Using masking tape, attach one row of feathers on the bottom of the box, then overlap it with a second row; continue until the box is completely covered.

  5. Fashion a tail for the chicken out of a scrap piece of cardboard and layer it with feathers as well.

  6. To complete the costume, make a chicken mask by taping a construction paper beak and feathers to a store-bought Lone Ranger mask.

  7. Let your child pull the box over his head, and he'll be ready to fly... or flap -- he's a chicken, after all.
