During the Festival of Lanterns, children carry candle-lit lanterns in the street. You and your kids can make your own with an 8 1/2-by-11-inch piece and a 1/2-by-six-inch strip of lightweight paper, such as gift wrap or decorated newsprint. Fold the larger piece of paper in half lengthwise and cut 18 slits, 3 1/2 inches long, into the fold and parallel to the short edges (begin cutting an inch from each edge and leave a half inch between each slit). Unfold the paper and staple or glue the short edges together, then glue the small strip to the sides at the top for a handle. As a safe alternative, illuminate the lanterns with small flashlights.
