chopstick twist Chopsticks aren't just for scooping up fried rice anymore–next time your family dines at a Chinese place, ask for an extra pair to bring home with the leftovers and let your daughter create her own hot hair sticks.

STYLE PREP

To make a pair like the ones shown here, paint stripes on the sticks with acrylic paint (or wrap narrow colored tape around them). Next, tie chopsticks and knot a piece of elastic thread or embroidery floss (about 15 inches long) around the top of the chopstick so that one end hangs down longer than the other. Wrap the long end around the stick about ten more times and knot tightly again. Put a thin layer of white tacky glue over the wrap. To finish, string beads onto the two ends, knot, and trim ends.

TIP: No matter how your child decorates the sticks, have her leave the bottom three quarters clear of glue-ons since that's the part that sticks through her hair.

TURNING HEADS

This works best on freshly washed hair that is still a bit wet. Twist your child's hair into a bun (secure with bobby pins, if necessary). Then, starting from the top of the bun, push the sticks, one at a time, through and under the bun so that they form an X.
