Marker Magic

Magic-marker creativity from FamilyFun

Sure, you can color and draw with markers, but what about all the other amazing superpowers that markers have? Here's an illustrated guide to some of our favorite marker tips and techniques.
Make a design with washable markers, then spritz with water so the colors bleed. color bleed
Use permanent markers on oven-baked clays--handy for decorating homemade jewelry.

With permanent markers, draw on a balloon, let dry, then inflate it to see the art grow.
Make a drawing with a white crayon, then color over it with a washable marker. color wash
Make dots with washable markers, then connect them with a wet paintbrush.

Using permanent markers, make shiny designs on a clean Styrofoam meat tray.
Photocopy a photograph, then colorize it with different colors of markers. colorize photo
Make a pattern of stripes on a piece of wood (note how the edges bleed slightly).

Draw with permanent markers on foam rubber (available at craft stores).
With fine-line washable markers, ink up a stamp to make a rainbow-hued print. rainbow print
To create a metallic look, draw with permanent markers on a sheet of tinfoil.

Draw a circle with a washable marker on uncoated paper. Drip water in the center.

Lay tracing paper over a photo, then "dot" in the image with any kind of marker.

Make your mark on glass with either permanent or dry-erase markers.
Scribble with a washable marker, then wet with a brush. When dry, add marker details. dry erase marker
With permanent markers, make a rubbing of a coin on tinfoil, then wipe away excess.

Pry apart corrugated cardboard, then run a marker over one half to create stripes.
