
Here's a fun way for kids to pass the time when it's too chilly to go for a dip. You don't need any materials, just a stretch of hard-packed sand.
To start, one child strikes a pose. Depending on the angle of the sun, his shadow may be very long and distorted, at least two or three times his height. His partner traces around the shadow with a stick. Then both kids can decorate the figure with a shell face, pebble buttons or seaweed hair. You can't take this beach giant home with you, but the mosaic makes a great photograph--especially if you put the picture in a frame decorated with glued-on shells.
