row, right sides together. Line up the edges, pin them and then sew them together using a 1/4-inch seam. Iron the piece open, pressing the seams toward ABC. In the same way, pin and sew a CBA row to the BDB row, making sure that the same colors are opposite each other on the diagonal. Again, iron the piece open, pressing the BDB seams toward CBA. Repeat this process to create the nine other nine-patches.
5. Sew your nine-patch squares to the solid squares, again putting right sides together and using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Repeat the process until all 20 squares have been sewn together in an alternating pattern, four blocks across by five blocks down.
6. Add the first border by sewing 2-by-20-inch strips of fabric B to the top and bottom. Trim away the excess ends of the strips and press the seams toward the inside of the quilt. Now sew 2-by-27-inch strips of B to each side. Again, trim the strips and press. For the second border, repeat the procedure with 2-inch strips of fabric D, 23 inches long on the top and bottom and 30 inches long on the sides. Trim the strips and press as you go.
