A Doll's Quilt

Your child's first quilting project from FamilyFun

by Karen Willing and Julie Dock
7. When the borders are sewn and ironed, cut out a piece of how to batting and a piece of fabric D, each the same size as your completed quilt top. The quilt is assembled right-side in, then turned right-side out, so begin by placing the backing, right-side up, on a smooth surface. Place your quilt top, right-side down, on the backing, and put the batting on top of the quilt top. Pin the layers in place with safety pins every few inches.

8. Beginning in the middle of one side, sew around the edges going through all three layers, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Round the corners as you come to them. Stop 5 inches from the beginning of your seam. Trim the corners on a diagonal, remove the safety pins and turn the quilt inside out, carefully pushing out the rounded corners. Smooth the quilt flat and safety pin again to hold the three layers in place.

9. Close the 5-inch opening by turning the 1/2-inch seam allowance to the inside and using a slip stitch (a small overhand stitch--shown above--that will make the seam almost invisible).
