embroidery needle with embroidery floss. Make a small stitch by pushing the needle through the center of the middle square of each nine-patch, and then bringing it back up through the quilt. Cut the floss, leaving about 1 inch on either end, then tie the two ends in a knot. These ties hold all three layers of the quilt together.
11. Next comes the actual quilting. Quilting designs can be anything you desire--a heart, a leaf, a star and so on. Use a chalk pencil or colored pencil to lightly mark your design on the large fabric blocks (test your pencil on a fabric scrap to make sure the mark will wash out). Use colored or white quilting thread and an up-and-down running stitch to sew along the outline. Keep your stitches small and even. It may help to use a thimble on your middle finger to push the needle through the layers.
12. You've done it! Be sure to sign and date your masterpiece. If none of your dolls are in need of a new quilt, you can hang your quilt on the wall by sewing two loops to the top of the quilt and running a dowel through them. Tie a ribbon or string to each end of the dowel and hang on a hook.
