Getting Kids Interested in the News

It's often easier to explain to your child why the sky is blue than why Yugoslavia is split in pieces or why Cubans risk their lives to journey to Florida. Current events, unlike scientific principles, are rarely cut-and-dry: they are always in flux, often irrational or illogical, and at times driven by sheer emotion. In some cases, even the most well-read parents can't know all the answers or explanations, often because they simply don't exist.

But don't let the depth or intensity of the news scare you away from discussing current events with your children. Try to look at the news as an exploration of the world around you--getting started is easy:event cards

• Invite your child to watch the evening news with you and use commercial breaks for discussion.

• Tear out articles from the newspaper or magazines that might appeal to your child's interests.

• Most kids like surfing the 'net, so try Websites like CNN, MSNBC or even C-SPAN.

Once you've piqued your child's interest, try the following activities--they can help your entire family become more involved in the world around them.
