5 FamilyFun strategies for keeping kids safe online

Customize your existing Web browser to filter inappropriate sites

HOW IT WORKS: The two most popular Web browsers, Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, have parental controls built in that can be adjusted to screen Web sites for varying degrees of adult content. Both rely on the same protocol for doing so, a scheme that requires Web site creators themselves to rate their own sites.

PROS: You can do this immediately, and it doesn't cost a cent.

CONS: Since nobody can legally force all Web sites to comply (and nobody is in place to do it for them), the system is essentially being ignored. Very few sites, including some of the best sites for kids, have bothered rating themselves, and since un-rated sites are automatically blocked, you'll have trouble getting anywhere with the controls activated.

BOTTOM LINE: Although well-intentioned, the system isn't yet working.
