Mix & Match Hats: Braids

It's all about personal style when it comes to this customizable cap. With removable accessories — braids, horns, flowers, pint-size pals, even a "fauxhawk"—your kids can change their look to match their changing mood.

Materials
  • Fleece

Instructions
  1. Mix & Match Hats: Flowers - Step 1 Start by sewing five snap bases to a store-bought hat (one at the center and the remainder placed 2 inches out, hole-to-hole, in varying directions, as shown at right). Then create the fun add-ons shown at right, using the snap tops.

  2. Mix & Match Hats: Braids Step 2 Cut six 1- by 20-inch strips of fleece. Make two stacks of three strips each. Sew a snap top to one end of each stack near the edge, then round these ends.

  3. Braid the strips in each stack, stopping about 3 inches from the end. Tack these ends with embroidery floss, then tie a small strip of f leece around each for a bow. Cut the unbraided portion into fringe. To attach the braids, sew two additional snap bases to the inside of your hat, under the brim.
