Create a Guide to Your Hometown

Write the book on your corner of the world

by Lisa Stowe
Page From Our Book: RestaurantsRestaurants
For this section, we first voted on the best local eateries, then wrote the results on small pieces of paper and glued them to the page. Abby also added a logo for our favorite ice-cream shop. Consider including reminders about preferred dishes too: Megan penned a note about her favorite ice-cream treat. We then put all of our takeout menus in a three-hole plastic envelope, adding a list of the restaurants and their phone numbers to the outside for quick reference.

Here, we wanted to document the places around town where the kids like to burn off extra energy. We had a spirited discussion about which playground is actually the best and then decided it didn't much matter, as they all have something great to offer. This page contains the names and addresses of our top four picks, as well as Katie's vision of her favorite. We used playful, brightlycolored letter stickers across the top and added a photo of Abby in mid-climb.

We created this section for all the great museums, theaters, and the like in our area. A brochure was perfect for titling this page, dedicated to one of our favorite local museums. We included a photo of Katie with a collage she created during a trip to the museum, a note about what we love about the place, and some fun stickers. The museum's hours and phone number (cut from a second brochure and glued to the bottom of the page) will come in handy when we're planning future visits.

This section represents the various hobbies and other activities that my girls are into. For this page, dedicated to the farm where Katie and Megan are learning to ride horses, we started with drawings and a collection of themed stickers (another great find at the craft store!). We then added a picture of the girls during a lesson and a list of their favorite mounts (both are held in place with photo corners). We also included the farm's phone number and a handdrawn version of its sign.

We love to spend time outside, so we made sure to include a section devoted to our favorite places for walks, hikes, and bike rides. For this page on a choice hiking spot, we included a picture of the girls on the trail, along with a small, adhesive-backed envelope containing a piece of bark that caught Megan's eye on one of our outings. We also added a trail map, held in place with an adhesive Velcro dot for easy removal when we're planning our next hike.
