Felt Pups

Felt Pups
Total Time Needed:
Afternoon Or Evening

Here's a pattern for an adorable dog with movable legs. It's a basic shape that's easy to transform into various breeds. For instance, add spots with a fine-tipped permanent marker for a Dalmatian, or sew on pom-pom poufs and voila, a poodle.

Materials
  • Felt
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Fine-tipped permanent markers
  • Colored pencil
  • Yarn
  • Cotton ball
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread

Instructions
  1. Felt Pups Make a paper pattern by tracing the pieces shown or printing them from these patterns. Pin the pattern pieces to your felt and cut them out.

  2. Felt Pups Stitch the two body/head pieces together; leave the belly open for stuffing. Stuff with cotton balls or fabric scraps. Stitch the belly closed. Knot and cut the thread.

  3. Felt Pups Bend small pieces of pipe cleaner for all four legs. Set the pipe cleaners aside. Stitch about three quarters of the way around a leg, insert the pipe cleaner, then sew the rest of the leg. Knot the thread and cut. Repeat for the other legs.

  4. Felt Pups Attach each pair of legs by piercing the threaded needle through one leg, the body, and the other leg, then back and forth through the body a few more times. Knot the thread under one of the "legpits."

  5. Felt Pups Sew on the ears and the collar. Fold and pin the tail in half (twist the tip or leave it as is), then sew as shown. Sew it onto the body. Gently pull the tail so it curls up at the end.

  6. Felt Pups Practice drawing eyes, a nose, and a mouth on a felt scrap with a fine-tipped permanent marker, then draw them on your dog. Add any distinguishing breed details you like.
