Last year at planting time, Lily watched awestruck as I pulled rock after rock out of soil I've turned a dozen times before; try as I might to convince her otherwise, she was certain they'd been secretly reproducing underground. This clever craft not only dresses up your garden (and helps you ID all the newly sprouted seedlings in your vegetable patch), it also finally offers a way to use that annual crop of garden rocks.

- Smooth rocks in various shapes and sizes
- Waterproof acrylic paints and brushes
- Puffy paint (optional)

Rinse the rocks to remove any dirt and let them dry. Apply a base coat of acrylic paint to the top and sides of each rock. We painted our rocks to match the colors of the vegetables themselves.

When the base coat is dry, your child can decorate the rocks with the name of the appropriate flower or vegetable. In addition to row markers, we also created some purely decorative rocks (for example, a "welcome to my garden" rock). For flourishes and lettering, we especially liked the look of puffy paint.
