A Love of Insects

Ways to satisfy your child's interest in bugs

Question While I garden, my kids love to explore and see what insects they can find hiding amongst the plants. I'd like to come up with some projects or ideas to help foster their curiosity. Can you help?

Answer Gardens attract a myriad of insects and can provide hours of fun for curious kids. Planting flowers that attract butterflies--bee balm, coreopsis, purple coneflowers, and more--in a butterfly garden is a sure-fire way to guarantee that your explorers can catch at least a fleeting glimpse of these fritillaries. For a more in-depth look at some winged friends, try making the catch-and-release Ladybug Inn or Bug Hotel. Attracting arachnid artists to hang out in your garden is easy with a simple Web Frame. And finally, when summer turns to autumn, bring the bugs inside to rest their weary wings by making some cute, fuzzy ladybug and bee Houseplant Stakes.
