Having worked at Bramble Hill Farm for the past seven years, Hans Leo has a few tips for inspiring young gardeners: Kids like quick results, so include fast-growing plants. For flowers, Hans recommends nasturtiums and marigolds. Radishes make a good vegetable choice.
Plant foods your kids like to eat. Once they've tasted just-picked vegetables, they may be inspired to try more. "It's an amazing thing to see children eating fresh beans, peas, and carrots and talking to each other about the taste," says Hans.
Encourage your kids to pitch in with the planting, weeding, and picking, but resist stretching these activities beyond their attention spans. Hans recalls when he was a child in Germany and he and his cousins helped tend his aunt's kitchen garden. "Gardening was never a chore, but something we looked forward to in the summer."
