Favorite Kids' Room Themes & Ideas

Inspirational ideas from the FamilyFun Message Boards

Create an out-of-this-world kid's room using some of these favorite ideas from the FamilyFun message boards.

1 GLOW-IN-THE-DARK WORLD I painted the ceiling and walls a dark blue, trim a gold color, then painted the nightstand and dresser to match the trim. We got a bed set with glow-in-the-dark stars on it. On one wall we have a glow-in-the-dark solar system (wall clings), and on the ceiling we have the constellations (glow-in-the-dark stickers from a kit I got from amazon.com). On the nightstand and dresser I stamped glow stars and moons and painted over them with silver glitter (you see the glitter in the day, the glow-in-the-dark at night). I also stamped this on the wall without the solar system on it. My son painted a spaceship at the ceramics store and we hung it on the wall. I used solar-system fabric to make pillows, curtains, and a hiding place (glued to the bottom shelf of a built-in). He has a disco ball that makes moons and stars over his walls when it's on. I found a glow-in-the-dark mobile with stars and moons to hang over the bed. My son made drawer pulls with glow-in-the-dark clay. -- astronomy27

2 STAR THEME My daughter ended up with a star theme in her room. We bought the glow-in-the-dark plastic stars and stuck them to the ceiling (neat effect when she turned off the lights). Got her a navy blue comforter with stars, navy curtains and pillows, and a couple of star-shaped lamps for accents. Accented with yellow, this is a nice contrast. I have a theory with kids' rooms: Always decorate with items that can be changed out as their tastes change -- because believe me, they will! -- bvmomx3

3 SPACESHIP I once saw the most wonderful space-themed bedroom. It was all decorated in red, blue, gray, and silver. And next to the bed was a spaceship. It was made of a cardboard tube (the type used to form concrete columns). the tube was cut in half lengthwise and stuck to the wall. At the base were some pieces of plywood cut to shape the base of the rocket. And on top they had used a sheet of tin cut to make a 1/2 cone shape. It was painted very simply with USA down the side. --- connors70

4 FRAMED PLANETARY ARTWORK I bought a box of 10 silver frames in different sizes. I had the boys draw planets, aliens, and stars and then put an arrangement of the frames on one wall with some of their photos and some of their drawn pictures. It looks great! -- NH_Mommy

5 PAPIER-MACHE PLANETS Why not make all the planets (don't forget the new one they found last summer) out of papier-mache? You can hang them in orbit around the sun from the ceiling -- and maybe even add a spaceship. --astronomy27

6 OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD WASTEBASKET My daughter just painted her wastebasket black and then stamped on images of suns, moons, and stars, to match her room decor. (Now I only hope it will be used!) -- verbina867

7 BLUE SKIES For my toddler's room, I painted the entire room blue, including the ceiling, then put clouds all over the place. It really gives the impression that it's airy and big. I then added a green rug to simulate grass. Of all the rooms in my house, my son's is the most comfortable and spacious looking. -- frootbat31
