Star Candleholders
Easy holiday decorations from FamilyFun
This project has the hands-on appeal of cookie-making, with an end result that's much longer lasting. Prep time is blessedly short: less than 30 minutes, not including baking time.
MATERIALS
Polymer clay (Sculpey III or Fimo)
Waxed paper
Star cookie cutter
Pencil
Glass baking dish
Taper candles
Knead the clay on a sheet of waxed paper, then roll it out to a thickness of about 1 inch using a drinking glass or marble rolling pin. Don't use a wooden one, as the clay will stick. Cut out a star with a cookie cutter.
Using a pencil or your finger, gradually make a hole in the center. If you move too quickly, you'll distort the shape. Test the fit with a candle when you think the hole is correctly sized. Make sure it's a perfect fit, then set the star in a glass baking dish. Bake according to the manufacturer's directions (usually about 30 minutes). Once the holder has cooled, put in your
candle (use dripless ones), using an unbaked piece of clay to secure it, if necessary. If you're worried about wax leaking, which shouldn't happen if the fit is tight, set a star-shaped piece of foil under each holder.
