The lean-to half of our fort is spacious and shady, with a rustic roof that affords plenty of ventilation. For safety's sake, be sure to properly secure your support sticks and not use anything heavy or sharp for sheathing.
1. Find two trees, 8 or so feet apart, and at least 4 inches in diameter. Lash a cross pole between them, parallel to the ground. (See our lashing instructions for more information.) |
2. Lean a row of sturdy sticks against the cross pole at about a 60-degree angle. If necessary, cut the sticks to the proper length (ask a parent for help with any sharp tools). |
3. Create side walls with shorter sticks. Anchor the sticks in place with a perimeter of heavy rocks. |
4. Further secure the frame by weaving and tying lengths of scrap rope to connect the various supports. |
5. Lay on whatever sheathing material you have on hand, such as old tarpaulins, scrap lumber, hay or cardboard. Again, avoid sharp or heavy items. |
6. Continue placing on layers of sheathing until the lean-to is covered (keep a few spots open for doors and windows). Decorate with signs. |
