The Perfect Fort

Clubhouse rules from FamilyFun

by Tom Birdseye

MATERIALS

Sticks
Rope
Rocks
Brush
Various sheathing materials

The lean-to half of our fort is spacious and shady, with a rustic roof that affords plenty of ventilation. For safety's sake, be sure to properly secure your support sticks and not use anything heavy or sharp for sheathing.
step 1 1. Find two trees, 8 or so feet apart, and at least 4 inches in diameter. Lash a cross pole between them, parallel to the ground. (See our lashing instructions for more information.)
step 2 2. Lean a row of sturdy sticks against the cross pole at about a 60-degree angle. If necessary, cut the sticks to the proper length (ask a parent for help with any sharp tools).
step 3 3. Create side walls with shorter sticks. Anchor the sticks in place with a perimeter of heavy rocks.
step 4 4. Further secure the frame by weaving and tying lengths of scrap rope to connect the various supports.
step 5 5. Lay on whatever sheathing material you have on hand, such as old tarpaulins, scrap lumber, hay or cardboard. Again, avoid sharp or heavy items.
step 6 6. Continue placing on layers of sheathing until the lean-to is covered (keep a few spots open for doors and windows). Decorate with signs.
