Siphon Experiments
Water never flows uphill--or does it? If it's being siphoned it does, and therein lies the appeal of this ever-astounding physical phenomenon. All you need to see the process in action is several feet of 1/4-inch-diameter clear plastic tubing from your hardware store (about 20 cents a foot) and a few large containers.
DIRECTIONS: Wash out your tubing and put one end in a full container of clean water. Now give a gentle suck to the other end to start the water moving through the tube. Once it reaches the end, hold the tube to the very bottom of an empty container. The water will flow through the tube, even traveling uphill, as long as the water level in the receiving container is lower than the level in the supply container. To siphon faster, put the supply container on a stool above the receiving bucket. Or try these other variations.
COLOR SWIRLS: Place drops of food coloring in the full container and watch how the color flows through the tube.
THE ULTIMATE STRAW: Give your kids an unusual way to rehydrate on a hot day. Siphon a flavored drink from a pitcher on the table into their eager, open mouths below.
