This knot is used to join two ropes of equal size. Pass the working end of the first rope over, under and over the working end of the second rope. Then, pass the working end of the second rope under, over and under the working end of the first rope. Finally, pull the ropes in opposite directions to tighten.

Also known as the fisherman's bend, this knot is handy for lifting pails or other heavy items. Starting from behind the pail handle, wrap the working end of the rope loosely around the handle two times. (Do not tighten the small loop that forms above the handle.) Pass the working end behind the standing part, then around and through the small loop. Pull to tighten.
