You won't find these lovebirds on any store-bought card because they're made from your child's own handprints.

Materials

• Red card stock
• Ruler
• Butter knife
• White paper
• Pencil
• Pen

• Scissors
• Purple art paper
• Glue stick
• Colored paper
• Hole punch
• Red satin ribbon

Instructions

1. Create a crisp fold on the red card stock by scoring it: simply place a ruler where the fold will be and run the knife along the ruler without cutting all the way through the paper. Fold the card in half along the score line.

2. Have your child trace her hands, fingers splayed out to the sides and thumbs almost touching, on white paper. Then, using a copy machine, reduce the size of the "handprint" to fit the card. Draw a pen dot on each paper thumb for the birds' eyes.

3. Cut out the handprints. Glue the purple paper to the front of the card. Then glue the lovebirds and a small paper heart onto the card.

4. Punch two holes at the top of the card (through the front and the back). Thread the ribbon through the front two holes and tie. Finally, add a message to the inside of the card.
   

Tips:

If you have a toddler who can't sit still long enough to trace both hands, photocopy one hand's tracing, cut it out, and flip it over for a perfect match.
