Milk Jug House

- Instructions

For either structure, first cut a 3 1/2 inch square door opening in one of the container's flat sides with a craft knife (a parent's job). Cut out windows, if desired.
-
Glue craft-paper roof shingles around the top of the jug.
-
For a chimney, use a black marker to draw a few rows of bricks on a strip of red craft paper. Wrap the paper around the jug spout and glue it in place. Stuff a puff of cotton "smoke" into the spout.
-
Add paper window boxes or business signs.
-
To make a floor that fits inside the jug, set the jug on a piece of cardboard and trace around the base. Trim the edges of the floor so it will slide easily through the doorway. Decorate the floor by gluing on craft-paper tiles.
-
For home furnishings, your child can fashion curtains and scatter rugs out of fabric scraps.
-
Create a houseplant by turning a thimble open end up and filling it with short snips of a green pipe cleaner.
-
With modeling clay, mold a miniature sofa (pom-poms make great throw pillows) and add building-block end tables.
-
For a tiny table lamp, start with a round wooden bead for the base. Bend up the lower end of a pipe cleaner and push it into the bead. Shape the upper end into a frame for a shade. Wrap a strip of paper around the lamp shade frame and glue the ends in place.
-
If you're making a garage, add a fuel pump or air hose by poking a hole in the side of the jug and tying on a piece of string. A thread-spool car lift finishes off the interior.
