Plastic Needlepoint

Total Time Needed:
1-2 Hours

Wait -- Is that the sound of decades crashing together? Yes, iPod meets plastic needlepoint is a little bit like Hannah Montana singing backup for the Bee Gees. But in a good way. Because while it would have taken the entire decade to needlepoint a case for our 8-track tape player, this carrier sews up in a snap.

Materials
  • Yarn
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Button
  • Plastic needlepoint canvas

Instructions
  1. Plastic Needlepoint - Step 1 OUTLINE YOUR DESIGN: Thread the needle with a length of yarn and double-knot the end so it won't pull through the canvas. Sewing from the back of the front panel, use a backstitch (see diagram) to outline your design (we chose a musical note). If your yarn gets too short, double-knot it on the back of the panel, trim off any excess, and start with a new piece.

  2. Plastic Needlepoint - Step 2 FILL IN YOUR DESIGN: Use a half cross-stitch (see diagram) to fill in your design. Double-knot the end on the back of the panel and trim off any excess. To add a closure, sew a button to the center of the front panel. Thread a 7-inch length of yarn through the flap on the back panel and knot it in place.

  3. Plastic Needlepoint - Step 3 ASSEMBLE THE CASE: Thread the needle with a 5-foot length of yarn. Starting at a bottom corner, use a whipstitch (see diagram) to join the front and a side panel. Continue stitching along the top of the side panel, then down along the back, sewing it to the back panel. Sew the bottom panel in place, then add the other side panel. To close the case, wind the yarn on the top flap around the button.
