Portrait Pendants

Total Time Needed:
2-3 Hours

A hand-drawn portrait turns a metal label holder into a token of affection for a beloved cousin, say, or aunt. Let your little one sketch a self-portrait or draw a picture of the present's recipient, then gift it on a sweet silver chain.

Materials
  • Label holders (we used Makingmemories brand, available at craft stores)
  • Colored pencils
  • White card stock
  • Mod Podge and paintbrush
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • 2 jump rings and 1 silver chain (available at craft stores)

Instructions
  1. Trace the outline of the label holder onto the card stock, then have your child draw a portrait inside. (For younger kids, you can let them draw on a 4- by 6-inch piece of paper, then reduce the portrait on a color copier using the 25 percent setting.)

  2. Trim the drawing to fit inside the label holder, then brush the front and back with Mod Podge. Let dry. Apply another coat to the front of the drawing and press it into the frame. When it dries, seal the drawing with a third coat of Mod Podge and let it dry completely.

  3. Use the pliers to attach the 2 jump rings to the label holder, then add a silver chain.
