Kid's Eye View
Wendy Ewald, author of I Wanna Take Me a Picture: Teaching Photography and Writing to Children, believes that children are natural photographers. Just give them a camera and encourage them to trust their ideas, and their pictures are bound to be great. In these parts, she is preaching to the converted. We doled out disposable cameras to five kids. Then we sat back and waited for a precious glimpse into their kid's-eye view of things: a sibling with a wide smile that we could never coax, the blur of pure motion, an evocative pair of footprints. And photography can't help but bring out the philosopher in our children. As ten-year-old Lilia Shally-Jensen says, "It feels like I am the thing that I'm taking a picture of." One day, your kids will reminisce not just about who their friends were or where you went on vacation, but about how they understood the world.
