When a Roman child was born, he or she was given a gold pendant, called a bulla, inscribed with a special symbol to ward off bad luck.

  • Gold tempura paint
  • Cord

Instructions
  1. Start with a fist-sized ball of self-hardening clay, pull off a grape-sized ball and set it aside.

  2. Working on a newspaper-covered surface, shape the larger piece into a 1/4-inch-thick circle and smooth the surface.

  3. Mold the smaller ball into a crescent moon.

  4. Moisten the back of the moon with water and gently stick it wet side down to the face of the pendant.

  5. With a pencil point, make a hole in the top of the pendant for the cord.

  6. Let the bulla dry overnight.

  7. Paint it with gold tempura paint.

  8. Thread cord through the hole and knot the ends together.
