cotton shirt in dye, the tint seeps down the fabric and creates a striking contrast of shades. The process can take a few hours, so you may want to reserve this one for kids old enough to understand that good shirts come to those who wait.
In the deep end of a paint roller tray, mix hot-water-soluble fabric dye, such as Rit dye, according to the package directions. (Keep in mind that dark hues, such as purple or red, work best.) Dampen a shirt with cool water, then dip only the collar and sleeves into the dye. Spread the rest of the shirt on top of the tray and let stand for 3 to 4 hours, by which time the color should have seeped about halfway down the shirt. If not, carefully pour more dye over the collar and sleeves and give it more time. Wearing rubber gloves, lift the shirt out and, holding it upside down, gently wring out excess dye. When the shirt is no longer dripping, rinse it under a faucet until the water runs clear. Then hang the shirt upside down to dry before wearing.
