FamilyFun intern Jessye Siciak of Bernardston, Massachusetts, introduced the age-old craft of creating silhouette portraits to her family last Christmas. "It's kind of neat to see where your features came from. I saw that I have my mom's nose!" said Jessye.

Materials
  • large sheet of white paper
  • black construction paper
  • colored construction paper
  • scissors
  • frame (optional)

Instructions
  1. To make your own silhouette artworks, tape a large sheet of white paper to the wall of a dimly lit room. Have someone sit sideways in a lamp's light so that the shadow of his head is cast onto the paper.

  2. Trace the profile onto the paper, cut it out, then use the cutout as a template to trace the profile onto black construction paper.

  3. Cut out that profile. You can then mount the silhouette on colored paper, embellish it with wrapping paper or other materials, and frame it.
