Carve a nonflammable -- yet spooky -- trick-or-treat lantern.

Materials

• Medium-sized, purple-topped turnip
• Paring knife

• Spoon
• Flashlight

Instructions

1. Slice off the very top of the turnip and hollow out the inside using a sharp paring knife and a spoon (parents only).

2. Carefully carve facial features in one side.

3. Cut a circle in the bottom of the turnip, to fit over the end of the flashlight. Finally, turn on the flashlight to give Jack a glow.
