Bed-and-breakfasts are known for their charm, intimacy and easy-going atmosphere. While some achieve this effect by carefully placed antiques and a quiet setting, the following B&Bs make the grade with teddy bear-shaped pancakes, kid-size snowshoes, sledding hills and bottomless cups of hot chocolate. These hideaways also feature exceptional hosts who'll steer you toward endless family activities, indoors and out. If you're looking for a B&B with authentic charm and real history, don't miss the La Dona Luz Inn in Taos, New Mexico.

LA DONA LUZ INN
TAOS, NM
Less than a block from Taos' historic plaza is the La Dona Luz B&B, run by Nina Meyers, her son Paul Castillo and their extended family. This 200-year-old adobe inn boasts 12 themed rooms (one features a collection of angels, another is dubbed the Cowboy Room). Many rooms feature Jacuzzis, adobe fireplaces, authentic Taos artifacts, such as kachinas and Pueblo pottery, and works by area artisans. You can also venture over to the adjacent El Rincon Trading Post to check out American Indian jewelry, moccasins and baskets as well as a pair of Kit Carson's britches. Rooms range from $59 to $219 with a $15 fee per additional guest (children six and over included). Call 505-758-4874 for more information.
