Tie-dyed Cookies For Dad
FamilyFun.comA Tie-Dyed Cookie is made of a simple refrigerator cookie dough that has been divided into portions, each colored with the new, vivid food coloring gels available in most supermarkets. Colored cookie dough is rolled out, layered, and rolled up, then sliced across to expose wild patterns inside. Dough "pebbles" can also be formed into a roll. When they're sliced in cross-section, a mosaic pattern appears. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
- Ingredients
-
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted (regular) butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons milk or water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- Gel-type food coloring tubes
- Instructions
-
-
With a hand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light colored and fluffy.
-
Mix the milk, vanilla, and egg yolk in one bowl, and the dry ingredients in another bowl. Add the dry and wet ingredients alternately to the butter-sugar concoction, mixing well after each addition.
-
Divide dough into as many pieces as you want colors, putting each piece in a small bowl. Squeeze the gel color onto the dough (1/2 teaspoon of the gel will brilliantly color 1 cup of dough) and mash in well with a fork. See the package directions for making secondary colors.
-
Wrap dough cylinders in plastic wrap and chill until firm.
-
Slice across dough cylinders to make round cookies. Bake at 350 degrees for 5-7 minutes. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes then gently loosen with a metal spatula.
