Star Wars still has near universal appeal, but it's old enough to withstand a humorous parody, and that's what LEGO Star Wars is: a lighthearted romp through the Star Wars films, with an emphasis on humor and inside jokes. LEGO Star Wars featured the recent prequel trilogy, and this sequel follows the plots of the original trilogy: Episode's IV-VI, better known as "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi."

LEGO Star Wars II plays in a 3rd person, over-the-shoulder perspective, and puts you in control of LEGO-composed versions of Han Solo, C-3PO, Princess Leia, Luke, Chewie, and more. After completing the game, you can even control Darth Vader. Levels center on scenes from the films and are rife with humor and parody. Leia pops R2-D2's top as if the little robot was one of those foot-operated trash cans, and jams the Death Star plans inside. The gameplay revolves around finding LEGO pieces and other power-ups and completing missions. Throughout you'll fight Stormtroopers, Bounty Hunters, and other Star Wars characters, as well as piloting X-Wing fighters, and of course, dueling with LEGO Darth Vader.

Parents, take note: The game is violent and combat-centric--even Princess Leia has a wicked hand slap attack--but characters and bad guys who get killed simply break apart into inoffensive LEGO pieces. It's a brilliant dodge, makes the violence playful and toy-like, and it'll remind anyone who's ever played with LEGO how they used to play with the pieces. Regardless, the violence is far less than in the movies and the humor, while sometimes crude, is rarely more offensive than a mild joke about passing gas.

Families can use the game to relive the Star Wars experience, or use it to introduce tweens to the Star Wars universe, while enjoying superb gameplay and a belly laugh or two. Its sheer cleverness alone qualifies LEGO Star Wars as one of the Best Video Games of 2006 for families.
