Summer Jobs for Kids

Tips for kids' first jobs from FamilyFun

Know a little star that just shines in the limelight?entertainment They may go far
if cast in an entertainment-related job. By taking their talent to the streets, whether it's clowning around at birthday parties or putting on a really, really, big show, they're sure to win both fame and fortune. To gain recognition fast, advertising strategies can be dramatic— a jumbo, marquee-shaped yard sign, for example. Not the look you want for your lawn? Then suggest posting flyers at child-friendly spots like your local library, community center, and public pool. A kid who craves more attention can send a brief press release about his business to the local paper.

JOB IDEAS

The Everything Show
This business is for the type of child you can imagine producing an extravaganza like the Oscars. It's a neighborhood music, dance, knock-knock joke recital! As impresario, your child would round up the acts, run rehearsals, and earn ticket sales income for this neighborhood kid variety show. Chances are, she'd also make executive decisions about programs, how to pay the actors, and more.
There's no business like show business!

Dance Academy
A kid who's gotta dance can organize a dance class (by herself or with a friend) for younger children. Parents would pay a fee for their child to participate. It might be a three week, twice-weekly class, with a big recital for the parents as the grand finale.

Book Break
If your child's an outgoing book lover or just likes to tell stories, he could host regular story hours in your home. Whether he chooses to read, use puppets, act out the book or simply tell some childhood favorites, the money he earns could lead to a very happy ending. Although parents shouldn't need to be on the premises every minute as babysitters (if you do, your child may not be old enough for this job), they may want to be available for emergencies.

Clown/Magician
A few simple magic tricks, some silly clothes, a wig, and your child could be the hit of the kiddie party circuit (and not as scary as an adult clown to some kids). Birthday parties, local fairs, company picnics, and other community events where people want to keep kids entertained are all possible venues.
