Saturday morning, and the living is finally easy. After another long, hectic week, the kids are plopped down, eyes glazed, in front of the tube, Mom is simultaneously ending a phone call and wiping down the counters, and Dad is deep into the world of sports, courtesy of the local paper. Apart from squeaky cartoon voices, the occasional giggle, and the drip-drop of the coffeemaker, the day begins relatively silent and still. Sounds peaceful, doesn't it? But after a busy five-day stint wrapped up in routine, is this scenario really what you want?
If you've been searching for unique, rewarding--and free--quality time with your loved ones, look no further. Volunteering together in your community can be a fun and memorable experience for every member of your family, whatever their age or skill level. All that's needed is a willingness to help. Once you've established that, the opportunities are endless.
These days, more and more American families seem to be getting into the giving spirit. A recently conducted Gallup survey revealed that more than a third of American households claim volunteering together as part of family life. The most popular activities include helping older people, working with youth programs, helping church or religious programs, assisting in sports or school programs, participating in environmental programs, and serving the homeless.
Every November, the Alliance for Children and Families sets aside one week to show Americans just how powerful volunteering as a family can be. Coinciding with the welcoming warmth of homemade pumpkin pies and fireside fun, National Family Week is a time to thank those who make our families successful throughout the year. Amid the basting and the feasting, it's easy to get caught up in holiday hysteria. But with just a little bit of effort, families can work wonders in helping communities grow.
