Each year my family starts the big meal by telling the story of the first Thanksgiving. We explain how the Pilgrims experienced terrible famines, and even after they learned to plant crops from their Native American neighbors, they never forgot their hardships. To remind ourselves of all that we have to be thankful for, we put three kernels of corn at each place at the table. We pass around a small basket, and everyone puts their kernels in it and shares three things they are thankful for. We laugh at the silly things and are touched by other blessings. This warm tradition reminds us how we are all tied together.
