The Route of the Hiawatha, a bicycle rail trail at Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area, near Wallace, Idaho, about an hour and a half drive from Spokane, Washington
WHO VISITED:
Leah and Paul Zimmer of Port Orchard, Washington, and their sons, Noah, age 5, and Nico, age 2
WHY THEY LOVED IT: Once a busy railroad line, the Route of the Hiawatha is now a 15-mile gravel and dirt bike trail that meanders gently downhill, past pine-covered slopes, over seven trestle bridges, and through ten tunnels. The longest, St. Paul's Pass, runs underground for nearly two miles. "Noah 'directed' us through the tunnel with his flashlight," says Leah. "He was 2 years old at the time, riding in the baby buggy, and he loved every minute of the trip. Especially after the tunnel, when we saw a moose on the side of the trail!" The family recently returned to the Route, this time with son Nico in the buggy too.
WHAT IT COSTS: Day trail passes are $9 for adults, $6 for kids ages 6 to 13. An optional shuttle from the trail's end to the main parking lot costs $9 for adults, $6 for kids ages 6 to 13. Bike rental packages start at $29 for adults, $18 for kids ages 3 to 13. The Route is open seven days a week from late May to early October.
