Hands-On Alphabet

Hands-On Alphabet Ages: 1 year and up

In a toddler's world of untouchables, it's nice to offer up the occasional hands-on A-OK. This set of textured letters is sure to satisfy all 10 little fingers (and maybe some toes).

First, select an array of materials with different textures, such as craft foam, faux fur, sandpaper, velvet, satin, corrugated cardboard, bubble packaging, or terry cloth. With scissors or a craft knife, cut one letter from each piece of material, making the most complicated letters, such as R and Q, from the most easily cut materials, such as craft foam or sandpaper. Then use tacky glue to affix the letters, one per card, to stiff paper or cardboard.

You might want to start with your child's name and add the rest of the alphabet over time. For safety, check periodically that none of the material is peeling away from the backing.
