Inspiring ideas for making the most of naps and bedtime
People-who-love-me Mobile

Ages: newborn and up

Faces of loved ones watch over your baby while she sleeps, then greet her when she wakes. We like this mobile for its simple, clever design -- the photos on the bottom of the stars face downward, where your baby can see them -- and its adaptability (the photos can be black and white for a newborn, or color for an older baby).

You Will Need

  • Pencil
  • Craft foam (2 to 4 sheets, depending on your color combination)
  • Scissors
  • 2- to 3-inch juice container lid
  • 4 close-up photographs
  • Craft knife
  • Four 4-foot lengths of 1/8-inch-wide ribbon
  • Tacky glue
  • 8-inch embroidery hoop (available at craft stores in wood or plastic); you'll use the solid inner hoop

Step 1: Draw a 5-pointed star (we traced a 5-inch wooden cutout; available at craft stores) onto a piece of craft foam. Cut out the star. Use it to trace 3 more stars onto craft foam and cut them out. Next, trace a 2- or 3-inch juice lid onto each of the photographs and cut them out.
Step 2: Using a craft knife, cut two 1-inch slits in one of the stars, as shown, approximately 1 inch apart. Thread a ribbon down through one slit and up through the other. Pull the ribbon through until the ends are even. Repeat with the other stars.
Step 3: Spread a thin layer of tacky glue onto the back of each photo, then stick them to the undersides of the stars, covering the ribbons.
Step 4: Using double knots, tie the ribbons to the hoop at varying lengths (ours hang down 5 inches, 7 1/2 inches, 9 inches, and 12 inches). To keep the ribbons from sliding, glue each knot to the hoop with a dab of tacky glue.
Step 5: Gather all the loose ends and tie them together about 8 inches up from the hoop. Tie the ends in a pretty bow and trim them. (Remember to hang mobiles out of your baby's reach.)
