A week before the event, your kids can send out canine-themed invitations, perhaps dog bones or miniature doghouses cut out of construction paper. To prevent chaos, it's probably wise to limit the guest list to human friends, but if your pooch has a best pal, you may want to include him, too.
Your kids can spruce up the guest of honor by giving him a bath. And if he's tolerant, they can crown him with a special birthday hat. Human partygoers can have fun donning plastic dog nose party favors, which are available at most toy stores.
Supply construction paper and glue, and the kids can make cone-shaped hats to decorate with cutout biscuits collars, license tags and other dog-related shapes.
For entertainment, stage a talent show featuring your family's four-legged star. During the days preceding the party, your kids can rehearse his repertoire of tricks and try teaching him a few new ones. Of course, after the performance, all the guests will want a chance to shake his paw.
