The first Caldecott Medal was awarded to ANIMALS OF THE BIBLE by Dorothy P. Lathrop. It was originally published by Frederick A. Stokes Co. in 1937. Verses from the King James version of the Bible are illustrated with pictures of the various animals mentioned.
The 2000 Caldecott Medal winner is JOSEPH HAD A LITTLE OVERCOAT by Simms Taback, published by Viking in 1999. This picture book for ages four to eight is the retelling of a Yiddish folk song about Joseph, a resourceful tailor who can make something out of nothing.
There are two author/illustrators who have won the Caldecott Medal twice: Nonny Hogrogian and Chris Van Allsburg.
