The court jester was so impressed with the candy masks the children had crafted, he couldn't think of a joke to tell. Instead, he ran to his room and wrote a play that he performed with the children that very night to celebrate their clever invention.
To make a mask, each child taped a paint stirrer to the back of a paper plate, then held it in front of her face to mark the eyes. She then cut out eyeholes. Next, she trimmed the plate to the shape of the mask, cutting out a hairdo, funny ears or a top hat. Using Royal Icing, the kids attached candy features to their masks, such as shoestring-licorice eyelashes, gummy smiles, chocolate-sprinkle beards and gummy-fish barrettes.
