Little Helpers: Simple Ways to Make Housework Fun for Tots

Ages: 2 years and up

Chore a Day Here's a cute cue for your cooperative kid: a handy holder that offers her a way to take charge of chores. Swap out the photo every day or two to give her a visual reminder of how she can help.

Begin by affixing a sheet of craft foam to the sticky side of adhesive-backed magnetic paper. Next, use a pencil to trace your child's hand on the foam. Now cut out the shape with scissors. On the foam, write "I can lend a hand!" with a permanent marker. To use the chore reminder, find or snap 5 or 6 photos of your child doing particular tasks, such as sorting silverware, putting away toys, and picking up laundry. (You can also download illustrated cards here.)

Stick the hand to the fridge, then slide the photo showing the job behind the fingers. Encourage your child to check it each morning -- and then lend a hand all day.
