Little Helpers: Simple Ways to Make Housework Fun for Tots

Ages: 18 months and up

Toddlers Can Help with Laundry He can't feed his Cheerios to the cat or his pizza to the baby, but your toddler can stuff his dirty clothes into this friendly laundry monster! So smile and tell him to put a sock in it -- you'll be instilling a valuable habit without hampering his fun one bit. To make a Hungry Hamper, start with a small swing-lid plastic trash can (ours is from Linens-N-Things) and use markers to draw on a face. Extend the mouth around the bottom perimeter of the swinging lid. For a dapper touch, attach a mini straw hat (available at craft stores): slip one end of a 10-inch piece of ribbon through the straw on one side of the hat, around the lid of the hamper along the hinge, and back through the other side of the hat. Tie together the ends and cut off any excess ribbon.
